What is the true color of a maple leaf?

One autumn morning, a Zen master and his disciple stood before a large maple tree in a temple.

The Zen master asked his disciple,

"What color is that maple leaf?"

"It's red," the disciple replied.

At night, the Zen master asked his disciple again,

"What color does that maple leaf appear to be now?"

"It looks black," the disciple replied.

The Zen master asked,

"What is the true color of that maple leaf?"

단풍잎의 진짜 색깔은?

어느 가을 아침, 선사와 제자가 절의 커다란 단풍나무 앞에 서 있었다.

선사가 제자에게 물었다.

"저 단풍잎은 무슨 색이냐?"

"붉은색입니다." 제자가 대답하였다.

밤이 되자 선사가 제자에게 다시 물었다.

"지금 저 단풍잎은 무슨 색으로 보이느냐?"

"검은색으로 보입니다." 제자가 대답하였다.

선사가 물었다.

"저 단풍잎의 진짜 색깔은 무엇이냐?"
